About

Peter Andrew Beardsley, born on January 18, 1961, in Longbenton, North Tyneside, England, began his football journey at Wallsend Boys Club. After unsuccessful trials with Gillingham, Burnley, and Cambridge United, he started his professional career with Carlisle United in 1978, scoring 22 goals in 104 league games and helping them achieve promotion to the Second Division by the end of the 1981-82 season. Between 1981 and 1983, he also played three seasons for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American Soccer League before a brief and unsuccessful spell at Manchester United, where he made only one appearance in a League Cup tie.

In September 1983, Beardsley returned to Newcastle United, joining them for a fee of £150,000. He quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 20 league goals in his first season and forming a potent partnership with Kevin Keegan, contributing to the team’s promotion to the First Division. He continued to perform strongly, scoring 17 goals in 38 league games in his first First Division season, including a hat-trick against Sunderland. After the 1986 FIFA World Cup, he transferred to Liverpool in 1987 for a record-breaking £1.9 million, where he further cemented his reputation as a creative and influential forward.

During his time at Liverpool from 1987 to 1991, Beardsley won two First Division titles and an FA Cup. He formed successful striking partnerships with John Aldridge and later Ian Rush, contributing significantly to the team’s attacking prowess. He scored 59 goals in 175 appearances for Liverpool. Beardsley then moved to Everton in 1991, becoming one of only two players to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby. He later returned to Newcastle United in 1993, playing a key role under manager Kevin Keegan as the team challenged for the Premier League title.
