Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, known as Gavi, was born on August 5, 2004, in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Spain. His early football development began at La Liara Balompié, where he played for two years, followed by a two-season tenure in Real Betis’s youth academy. During his time at Real Betis, he notably scored 95 goals for their youth team, showcasing his early talent and offensive capabilities. In 2015, at the age of 11, Gavi joined FC Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy, a significant step in his career progression. He quickly advanced through the youth ranks, making his way to the U19 squad. In September 2020, Gavi signed his first professional contract with Barcelona, moving directly from the U16 team to the U19s, highlighting his rapid development and the club’s recognition of his potential.
Gavi’s debut for Barcelona B occurred on February 21, 2021, and he soon gained attention, leading to his inclusion in the first-team preseason by coach Ronald Koeman in 2020. His official La Liga debut for Barcelona’s first team came on August 29, 2021, making him the fourth-youngest player to do so at just 17 years and 24 days. His impactful performances and potential earned him a contract extension with Barcelona until 2026 in September 2022, officially joining the first team and receiving the number 6 shirt in January 2023. That same year, he earned significant individual accolades, including the Kopa Trophy and the Golden Boy award, recognizing him as one of the best young players globally. He also celebrated his first senior team honors with victories in the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga.
His international career with Spain commenced with a surprising call-up to the senior national team by Luis Enrique in September 2021. Gavi became the youngest player to represent Spain at the senior level on October 6, 2021, at 17 years and 62 days, during a UEFA Nations League semi-final against Italy. He further made history by becoming the youngest player to score for Spain at the senior level in June 2022 and, later that year, the youngest player to play and score for Spain in a World Cup match during the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Although he suffered a significant ACL injury in November 2023 while on international duty, impacting his 2023-24 season, he made a return to action in October 2024 against Sevilla.
