Peter H. Diamandis was born on May 20, 1961, in the Bronx, New York, to Greek immigrant parents. From a young age, he showed a profound interest in space exploration, evidenced by his first-place win in the Estes Rocket Design Competition at age 12, where he built a system to launch three rockets simultaneously. He pursued his academic career at Hamilton College before transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study biology and physics. During his second year at MIT in 1980, he co-founded Students for the Exploration and Development of Space.
After graduating from MIT in 1983, Diamandis enrolled in Harvard Medical School, pursuing his MD through the Harvard–MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. He co-founded the Space Generation Foundation in 1985 to inspire young people about space. In 1986, he temporarily paused his medical studies to obtain a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT, conducting research at NASA Johnson Space Center, the MIT Man Vehicle Laboratory, and MIT’s Whitehead Biomedical Institute. He completed his MD from Harvard in 1989. During his final year of medical school, he also served as managing director of the International Space University and CEO of International Micro Space, a microsatellite launch company.
Diamandis’ career is marked by the establishment of numerous ventures aimed at pushing technological boundaries. In 1994, he founded the XPRIZE Foundation, an organization that designs and manages public competitions to encourage technological development for the benefit of humanity. Under his leadership as chairman and CEO, the foundation launched significant initiatives, including the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE, which successfully incentivized the first private crewed spaceflight. He has since expanded his work into biotechnology and longevity, co-founding Human Longevity Inc. in 2014 and Celularity in 2018, both focused on extending healthy human lifespans. His ongoing efforts demonstrate a sustained commitment to fostering innovation and addressing global challenges through ambitious projects.
