About

Philip Andrew Babb was born on November 30, 1970, in Lambeth, London. He began his football journey with Millwall’s youth ranks before starting his senior career with Bradford City in 1990. Playing as a midfielder, Babb made 80 league appearances for Bradford City, scoring 14 goals. His performance led to a move to Coventry City in July 1992 for a fee of £500,000, where he spent two seasons. His notable displays earned him recognition, culminating in a record-breaking transfer for a defender when Liverpool signed him for £3.6 million on September 1, 1994. While at Liverpool, Babb played in 170 matches across all competitions over six Premier League seasons, scoring one goal against Coventry in September 1996. A significant achievement during this period was winning the 1995 Football League Cup. He also represented the Republic of Ireland, earning 35 caps and participating in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

After his time at Liverpool, Babb joined Tranmere Rovers on loan in January 2000, helping them reach the 2000 Football League Cup Final before his loan ended. He then moved to Portugal, joining Sporting CP on a free transfer in 2000. During his second season with Sporting CP, he played in 38 official games and contributed to the team winning both the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal in 2001-02. He concluded his playing career with Sunderland at the age of 33 in 2004, having made 48 appearances for the club, including a season in the Premier League and part of a Football League Championship play-off semi-final campaign. Following his retirement from playing, Babb had a brief stint as a manager for non-league side Hayes & Yeading United from 2013 to 2015.

Babb has since established himself in media, serving as a pundit for Sky Sports and LFC TV. He also contributes as a pundit for international games involving the Republic of Ireland. In 2006, he became an investor in ‘Golf Punk’ magazine, helping to save the publication. His media work includes providing freelance football analysis and frequently engaging with fans and participating in events related to his former clubs, such as acting as a race ambassador for the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon in 2018 and meeting fans for the Kop Run Bangkok in 2019.
