Piotr Paweł Żyła was born on January 16, 1987, in Cieszyn, Poland. He began his ski jumping career at an early age, training at the Sports Championships School in Zakopane. Żyła debuted in the Continental Cup in 2004, earning his first points in January 2005. His World Cup debut occurred later that month in Sapporo, where he secured a 19th-place finish. Early career highlights include a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in the team event and a Continental Cup victory in Villach in 2005. By the 2006/2007 season, he was consistently scoring World Cup points, with his highest individual finish being 19th in Titisee-Neustadt. He also contributed to Poland’s 5th-place finish in the team competition at the World Championships that year.
Żyła’s career gained momentum with improved results in the Continental Cup, leading to a return to the A-team in the 2011/2012 season. He achieved significant individual success with two second-place finishes during the Summer Grand Prix in Hakuba in 2011 and a bronze medal at the Polish Championship. His performance continued to improve, and in the 2012/2013 season, he earned his first World Cup podium with a shared victory in Oslo on March 17, 2013. This marked him as the fifth Polish ski jumper to win a World Cup competition. He followed this with a third-place finish in Planica a week later. On the team front, he earned a bronze medal at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 2013. He continued to be a key member of the Polish national team, contributing to another bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Falun.
In the 2016/2017 season, Żyła played a crucial role in Poland’s first-ever team victory in the World Cup in Klingenthal and a second team win in Willingen. He achieved an overall second-place ranking in the prestigious Four Hills Tournament. A landmark achievement came on March 4, 2017, when he, along with his teammates, secured Poland’s first World Champion title in the team event at the Lahti World Championships. His individual career peaked with gold medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in the normal hill event in 2021 and 2023, showcasing sustained excellence and solidifying his position as a leading figure in international ski jumping.
