Ray “Boom boom” Mancini

Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini captured the WBA Lightweight title on May 8, 1982, triumphing over Arturo Frias by first-round TKO at The Aladdin in Las Vegas, realizing a lifelong aspiration. Prior to this pivotal victory, Mancini made his professional boxing debut in 1979, securing an impressive first-round knockout against Phil Bowen. His dynamic style quickly led to further successes, including a win over former US champion Norman Goins in March 1981. Mancini claimed his first major accolade, the WBC-affiliated NABF Lightweight championship, in May 1981 by defeating Jorge Morales.

After a successful defense of this title, he challenged Alexis Argüello for the WBC Lightweight title in October 1981. Although a TKO loss for Mancini in the 14th round, the bout was critically acclaimed as one of the most spectacular fights of the decade, showcasing his resilience and compelling fighting spirit. Following his WBA title win, Mancini successfully defended his championship multiple times, overcoming Ernesto España in 1982, Duk Koo Kim in 1982, Orlando Romero in 1983, and Bobby Chacon in 1984, solidifying his status as a formidable champion. He ultimately lost the WBA Lightweight title to Livingstone Bramble in 1984.

Beyond his professional endeavors, he is a dedicated advocate for charitable causes, notably supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, lending his voice and influence to empower youth nationwide.
