Olympic gold medallist Redmond “Red” Gerard is a snowboarder from Ohio in the United States. He also represents the Toyota Motor Corporation.
In the FIS Snowboard World Cup Standings for Slopestyle in 2017, Gerard finished first overall. In Mammoth, California, in 2019, he took home the top prize in the Toyota Grand Prix. In men’s slopestyle, he also captured the Burton US Open title. In the 2018 Aspen Toyota Grand Prix, the 2018 Mammoth Toyota Grand Prix, and the 2017 Mammoth Toyota Grand Prix, he finished first, second, and first, respectively. He finished fourth in slopestyle at the 2015 FIS Junior World Championships, fourth in the 2017 Winter Dew Tour, and fourth in the 2017 Burton US Open.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics, Gerard represented the United States in the slopestyle and big air competitions. Gerard’s performance on the slopestyle podium earned him the gold medal. Before competing in the final, he had partied late, binge-watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Netflix and lost his jacket, meaning he had to borrow his roommate’s jacket. He also mistakenly cursed on live television following his victory. Gerard was the first athlete born in the 2000s to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. He was also the youngest American to win a medal in a snowboarding competition at the Olympics and the first American to win a gold medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
