Lydia Ko was born in Seoul, South Korea, on April 24, 1997. She emigrated to New Zealand with her family at age four and later became a New Zealand citizen. Her golf journey began at five years old at the Pupuke Golf Club in Auckland, where she was coached by Guy Wilson. By March 2005, at just seven years old, her talent was already recognized by the media as she competed in the New Zealand national amateur championships. Her early career was marked by numerous ‘youngest ever’ accolades, signaling her exceptional talent from a very young age. She studied through correspondence with Pinehurst School while on tour and later pursued psychology extramurally at Korea University.
Ko achieved significant milestones as an amateur, becoming the youngest person to win a professional golf tour event at 14 years old at the 2012 Bing Lee Samsung Women’s NSW Open. The same year, she became the youngest-ever winner of an LPGA Tour event at the CN Canadian Women’s Open at 15. She successfully defended this title in 2013, making her the only amateur to win two LPGA Tour events. Turning professional in October 2013, she won her first professional event on the KLPGA Tour shortly after. The LPGA Tour waived its age requirement, allowing her to join at 16, a testament to her immediate impact on the sport.
Her professional career has been defined by consistent success and record-breaking achievements. Ko earned LPGA Rookie of the Year in 2014, becoming the youngest ever to receive the award. She reached World No. 1 at 17, the youngest player of either gender to achieve this. In 2015, she won her first major, The Evian Championship, becoming the youngest female major winner in modern golf. Her most recent achievements include winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, completing her set of Olympic medals (silver in 2016, bronze in 2020), and securing her induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame as its youngest member. She also won the AIG Women’s Open in 2024 and the Kroger Queen City Championship, marking her fifth season with at least three wins on tour.
