Reggie Wayne, born on November 17, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, developed an early interest in sports, initially favoring baseball before committing to football in high school. He attended the University of Miami, where he became a four-year starter for the Hurricanes football team. During his college career between 1997 and 2000, Wayne set a school record with 173 career receptions, including a streak of 36 consecutive games with a reception. He was one of only five wide receivers in the school’s history to achieve 20 or more career touchdowns. His freshman season in 1997 saw him record 48 receptions, a school record that still stands.
Wayne was selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He spent the majority of his professional playing career, 14 seasons, with the Colts. During this time, he distinguished himself as a premier wide receiver, accumulating 1,070 receptions, 14,345 receiving yards, and 82 receiving touchdowns. He played a pivotal role in the Colts’ Super Bowl XLI victory in 2007. Wayne was a six-time Pro Bowl selection and a First-team All-Pro in 2010. Notably, he led the NFL in receiving yards in 2007 with 1,510 yards. He holds several Colts franchise records, including most postseason receptions (93) and receiving yards (1,254).
After a brief off-season stint with the New England Patriots in 2015, Wayne announced his retirement from professional football in 2016. Post-retirement, Wayne continued his involvement with the NFL, joining the Colts as a volunteer receivers coach in 2018 and later being officially hired as the wide receivers coach in 2022. He was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor in November 2018. Wayne has also been a modern-era finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame multiple times, recognizing his significant impact and achievements in the league.
