Rick Yutaka Fowler was born on December 13, 1988, in Murrieta, California. He developed his golf skills primarily at a driving range, largely self-taught. During his senior year at Murrieta Valley High School, Fowler won the SW League Final in 2007 with scores of 64-69 for a total of 133, leading his team to the state final. Following high school, Fowler attended Oklahoma State University, achieving his first collegiate victory at the Fighting Illini Invitational in October 2007, where he shot a 203 (70-63-70) to win by one stroke. His amateur career was marked by numerous successes, including winning the Western Junior in 2005, the Sunnehanna Amateur (2007, 2008), and the Players Amateur in 2007. He was also the leading individual player at the 2008 Eisenhower Trophy and contributed to the U.S. team’s victories in the 2007 and 2009 Walker Cup. Fowler was awarded the Ben Hogan Award in 2008.
Fowler turned professional in 2009. His professional debut on the Nationwide Tour at the Albertsons Boise Open was followed by a runner-up finish at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, losing in a playoff. He quickly made an impact on the PGA Tour, securing his card for the 2010 season after finishing T15 at qualifying school. In his early professional years, he achieved several runner-up finishes, including at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Memorial Tournament in 2010. His consistent play led to his selection for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2010, making him the youngest U.S. Ryder Cup player at 21 years and 9 months. He garnered the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award in 2010. His first professional win came in 2011 at the OneAsia Tour’s Kolon Korea Open, where he secured a six-shot victory over Rory McIlroy.
A significant turning point in Fowler’s career was his first PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2012, defeating Rory McIlroy and D. A. Points in a sudden-death playoff. He continued to demonstrate strong performances in major championships, highlighted by his 2014 season where he finished in the top 5 in all four majors—a feat previously achieved only by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. His second PGA Tour win came at The Players Championship in 2015, followed by victories at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open (2015) and the Deutsche Bank Championship (2015). In 2017, he won The Honda Classic and in 2019, the Waste Management Phoenix Open. After a period of struggles, he returned to winning form in July 2023 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, securing his sixth PGA Tour title in a playoff.
