Indonesia Rio Haryanto is an Indonesian racing driver known for his career in Formula One, GP2 Series, and various Asian racing championships. After competing at the highest levels of motorsport, he has transitioned into entrepreneurship.
Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned energy company, was Rio Haryanto's primary sponsor during his Formula One career. They contributed significantly to his funding, initially five million euros, to secure his seat with Manor Racing. Pertamina later withdrew its sponsorship when Haryanto was demoted from a race seat due to insufficient funds.
Manor Racing, a Formula One team, brought Rio Haryanto into the 2016 Formula One season as one of their drivers. Haryanto had a long-standing association with the Manor organization, having driven for its junior teams since 2010.
Campos Racing was Rio Haryanto's team during the 2015 GP2 Series season, where he achieved three victories and finished fourth in the championship.
T2 Motorsports was Rio Haryanto's team for sports car racing, including the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia and the 2019-20 Asian Le Mans Series, where he drove a Ferrari 488 GT3.
Rio Haryanto was born on January 22, 1993, in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. His early career in motorsport began in karting, where he won multiple continental championships before moving into junior formulae in 2008. Haryanto quickly established himself, winning his first major title in the Formula BMW Pacific Championship in 2009 with Meritus, securing 11 victories in 15 races. His success in regional series led him to compete in European championships.
Haryanto’s career progressed to the GP3 Series in 2010 with the Manor Racing team, where he achieved one victory and two podium finishes, ending the season in fifth place. He continued in GP3 in 2011, adding two more wins. Concurrently, he raced in the Auto GP series, securing a victory at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. He then moved up to the GP2 Series, participating from 2012 to 2015. During his time in GP2, he earned a pole position, multiple podiums, and three race wins, finishing fourth in the 2015 season, which brought him to international prominence.
In 2016, Haryanto made history as Indonesia’s first Formula One driver, joining Manor Racing for 12 Grands Prix. Following his Formula One stint, he transitioned to sports car racing, competing in the 2018 SIC888 Race and the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia. In 2019–2020, he participated in the Asian Le Mans Series with T2 Motorsports. Beyond racing, Haryanto is also a businessman, holding a business degree from Anglia Ruskin University and overseeing the security printing division of his family’s company, Kiky. He also owns Grandis Barn Restaurant and Teakyard Restaurant in Central Java.
