Robbie O’Davis

Robbie O’Davis was born on September 3, 1972, in Kurrajong, NSW. He grew up in Toowoomba, Queensland, and started his rugby league career playing senior rugby league at 16 alongside his father. After a period in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership with Eastern Suburbs, he transitioned to the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership, joining the Newcastle Knights in 1992. O’Davis debuted as a winger for the Knights on March 22, 1992, at Marathon Stadium, later switching to fullback in 1993, a position he held for nearly a decade. His relatively light playing weight of 78 kg meant he often had to overcome physical challenges on the field through skill and determination. These early years established his foundation as a dedicated athlete within professional rugby league.

Throughout his career, O’Davis achieved significant milestones, including making his State of Origin debut for Queensland in 1995 and his Test debut for Australia the same year. He was a key player in Queensland’s 3-0 series victory over New South Wales in 1995 and contributed to Australia’s World Cup win in 1995, scoring five tries during the tournament. A pivotal moment in his career was in 1997, when he earned the Clive Churchill Medal for his performance in the ARL Grand Final, scoring two tries that helped the Newcastle Knights secure their first premiership. He returned to play in 1999 after a year-long suspension, and subsequently played a crucial role in the Knights’ second premiership victory in 2001. O’Davis concluded his 13-season professional career in 2004, having played 223 games, scoring 78 tries and 45 conversions, accumulating 403 points.
