Robert William Savage was born in Wrexham on October 18, 1974. He attended Ysgol Bryn Alyn and joined Manchester United as an apprentice after completing his GCSE studies in July 1991. Savage carved out a robust career as a hard-working and aggressive midfielder, making over 600 professional appearances for clubs including Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, and Derby County. He earned 39 caps for the Wales national team, scoring two goals. Known for his tenacious playing style, Savage frequently accumulated yellow cards, embodying his all-action presence on the field.
After retiring from professional football in May 2011, Savage transitioned into a successful media career. He became a familiar voice and face, providing football punditry for BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 programme and contributing columns to the Daily Mirror and Zoo magazine. His candid opinions and insightful analysis quickly garnered a significant following. Beyond football, Savage expanded his public profile by participating in the 2011 series of Strictly Come Dancing, where he finished in sixth place, showcasing a different facet of his personality.
Savage’s career has seen a recent turn towards management, starting with his involvement in establishing Macclesfield F.C. in October 2020. He served on the board and later became director of football before being appointed head coach in June 2024. Under his leadership, Macclesfield achieved promotion to the National League North in March 2025. This progression led to his appointment as the manager of National League side Forest Green Rovers in July 2025, marking a significant step in his post-playing career.
