About

Robin Gayle Wright was born on April 8, 1966, in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in San Diego, California, and began her professional career as a model at age 14, working in Paris and Japan. After high school, she pursued acting, securing a role on the soap opera “Santa Barbara” (1984-1988), which earned her three Daytime Emmy nominations. During this time, she married fellow cast member Dane Witherspoon in 1986. Wright transitioned to film with a starring role as Princess Buttercup in “The Princess Bride” (1987). She next appeared in “Denial” (1990) and “State of Grace” (1990), where she met actor Sean Penn, with whom she had two children, Dylan Frances and Hopper Jack. After a break, she returned with varied roles in films such as “The Playboys” (1992) and “Toys” (1992).

In 1994, Wright achieved wider recognition for her performance as Jenny in “Forrest Gump,” earning a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Subsequent film roles included “The Crossing Guard” (1995), “Moll Flanders” (1996), and “Loved” (1997). She continued to appear in films like “Message in a Bottle” (1999) and “Unbreakable” (2000), for which she received a significant salary. In the mid-2000s, her work included the HBO miniseries “Empire Falls” (2005) and independent films such as “Nine Lives” (2005) and “Sorry, Haters” (2006). She also took on roles in “Moneyball” (2011), “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011), and as Lieutenant Joshi in “Blade Runner 2049” (2017).

A significant career turning point occurred in 2013 when Wright began playing Claire Underwood in the Netflix political drama “House of Cards.” Her performance garnered a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 2014, making her the first actress to win this award for a streaming series. She received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for this role and became an executive producer, directing ten episodes of the series. Following Kevin Spacey’s departure, Wright became the new lead for the final season. Her directorial work expanded to include the short film “The Dark of Night” (2017), premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, and her feature film directorial debut, “Land” (2021), in which she also starred as Edee Mathis. She has also directed for television series like “Ozark” (2022) and is set to direct and executive produce the upcoming series “The Girlfriend” (2025).
