Rohit Gurunath Sharma, born on April 30, 1987, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, to a Telugu-speaking family, began his cricket journey at a young age despite family financial constraints. Raised by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali, he started as an off-spinner but was quickly recognized for his batting talent by coach Dinesh Lad. Lad arranged a scholarship for Sharma at Swami Vivekanand International School, where his cricketing abilities flourished. He made his List A debut for West Zone in March 2005, scoring 31 not out. His unbeaten 142 against North Zone in the same tournament drew significant attention. Sharma’s first-class debut for India A came in July 2006, followed by his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006–07 season, where he scored 205 against Gujarat. He played a crucial role in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy win that season, scoring a half-century in the final.
Sharma’s international career began in June 2007, making his ODI debut against Ireland. He showed early promise with a maiden ODI half-century against Pakistan in November 2007 and was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, contributing an unbeaten 50 against South Africa and 30 not out in the final against Pakistan. Despite some early inconsistencies and being left out of the 2011 Cricket World Cup squad, Sharma’s career saw a significant turning point in 2013 when captain MS Dhoni promoted him to open the innings in ODIs. This move proved to be a “masterstroke,” leading to consistent performances including his first ODI century (114) against Zimbabwe in May 2010. His aggressive yet elegant batting style quickly earned him the nickname “Hitman” for his ability to score big centuries and clear the boundary with ease.
His Test debut came in November 2013 during Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series, where he scored 177 at Eden Gardens and an unbeaten 111 at Wankhede Stadium. Sharma’s leadership capabilities became evident when he captained the Mumbai Indians to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), making him one of the most successful captains in IPL history. Internationally, he led India to victories in the 2018 and 2023 Asia Cups, the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He holds numerous batting records, including the highest individual score in a One Day International (264) and the most double centuries in ODI cricket (3). He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the prestigious Khel Ratna Award in 2020, recognizing his significant contributions to Indian cricket.
