Rolonda Watts was born on July 12, 1959, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her mother, Velma Gibson Watts, was an associate dean at Wake Forest University, and her father, Roland Watts, chaired the Fine Arts Department at Winston-Salem State University. Watts attended Salem Academy and graduated magna cum laude from Spelman College, where she served as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. In 1981, she earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
Watts began her career as a general assignment reporter at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina, and later worked at WNBC and WABC-TV as an Emmy-nominated reporter and anchor. In 1991, she hosted “Attitudes” on Lifetime Television. The following year, she joined “Inside Edition” as a senior correspondent, weekend anchor, and producer. This led to her launching the internationally syndicated talk show “Rolonda,” which aired from 1994 to 1997. She was also a supervising producer and co-owner of Watts Works Productions for the show. After her talk show, Watts moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career, landing a recurring role as Vivica Shaw on “Sister, Sister” in 1997.
Her acting career includes appearances in dozens of television shows such as “Criminal Minds,” “Bull,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Watts is also a recognized voiceover artist, known for voicing Professor Wiseman on PBS’s “Curious George,” and characters in “The Penguins of Madagascar,” “Lego City Adventure,” and “Kung Fu Panda.” Recently, she returned to daytime television as the announcer and promo voice for “Sherri,” where she is often referred to as a “daytime talk show legend.” In 2024, she was inducted into the Silver Honor Society by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her lifetime achievements in television. She also features as a series regular in Bounce TV’s “Mind Your Business” and has a recurring role in Netflix’s “Survival of the Thickest.”
