Gabriel Macht was born on January 22, 1972, in the Bronx, New York, to museum curator and archivist Suzanne and actor Stephen Macht. His family relocated to California when he was five years old. Macht began his acting career at age eight, earning a nomination for a Best Young Motion Picture Actor Award for his performance in the 1980 film “Why Would I Lie?” (credited as Gabriel Swann). After this early experience, he temporarily stepped away from professional acting to focus on his childhood. He later pursued formal training at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh, graduating in 1994, and remained active in theater, including involvement with the Mad Dog Theater Company in New York.
Macht built a notable career in film and television roles, consistently receiving recognition for his performances. Early film credits include “The Object of My Affection” (1998) and “American Outlaws” (2001). He appeared in “Behind Enemy Lines” (2001), “The Recruit” (2003), and earned critical acclaim for his role as tormented writer Lawson Pines in “A Love Song for Bobby Long” (2004) alongside John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson. Macht also starred in Robert De Niro’s “The Good Shepherd” (2006) and the comic-book-inspired film “The Spirit” (2008).
His career reached a significant milestone with his casting as Harvey Specter in the USA Network legal drama “Suits” in 2010, a role he reprised for nine seasons until 2019. During his time on “Suits,” Macht also gained producer credits, starting as a co-executive producer in 2013 and eventually directing four episodes of the series. He is set to guest-star in the 2025 spin-off “Suits LA,” further solidifying his connection to the franchise.
