Ron Maclean

Ron MacLean is a celebrated Canadian sportscaster, renowned for his extensive hockey knowledge and passionate broadcasting, making him a prominent figure in Canadian sports media. After joining Hockey Night in Canada during the 1986–87 NHL season as a host for telecasts in Calgary and Toronto, Ron MacLean quickly expanded his role to become the early game host and anchor his first Stanley Cup Finals that spring. His tenure significantly defined Canadian sports broadcasting through his co-hosting role on ‘Coach’s Corner’ with Don Cherry. MacLean also served as a prominent figure in Olympic coverage for the CBC, hosting the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

His broadcasting excellence was further acknowledged with a Gemini Award for Best Sports Broadcaster in 2001, and two Gemini Awards for Best Host or Interviewer in a Sports Program or Sportscast in 2004 and 2006. Beyond the broadcast booth, MacLean showcased his deep hockey involvement by serving as a Level 5 referee with Hockey Canada, officiating in junior, minor pro, senior, and university leagues, notably including a 2006 NHL preseason game. In 2014-15, he transitioned to Rogers Media for NHL coverage, taking on significant roles with both ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ and ‘Hometown Hockey,’ and was inducted into the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2016, MacLean was reinstated as the host of the early games on ‘Hockey Night in Canada,’ solidifying his enduring presence in Canadian hockey.
