Canada Ron MacLean is a celebrated Canadian sportscaster, renowned for his extensive hockey knowledge and passionate broadcasting, making him a prominent figure in Canadian sports media.
Hosted Hockey Night in Canada and Rogers Hometown Hockey as part of a 12-year Canadian media rights deal through the 2037-38 season. This partnership highlights MacLean's deep involvement in national hockey broadcasting.
Joined Rogers Media when the company acquired national NHL rights, continuing his role in Hockey Night in Canada and becoming an on-location host for Hometown Hockey. Subsequently reinstated as host of early games on Hockey Night.

Ronald Joseph Corbett MacLean was born on April 12, 1960, in Zweibrücken, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, while his father was stationed with the Royal Canadian Air Force. His family later moved back to Canada, settling in Chester, Nova Scotia, before eventually residing in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. MacLean attended high school in Red Deer, Alberta. His broadcasting career began when he filled in for a friend at CKRD-FM, which led to a position at CKRD-TV.
MacLean joined Hockey Night in Canada during the 1986–87 NHL season, initially hosting telecasts in Calgary and Toronto. His role expanded significantly following the departure of Dave Hodge, becoming the early game host and working his first Stanley Cup Finals that spring. A crucial part of his tenure involved co-hosting “Coach’s Corner” with Don Cherry. Throughout his career, MacLean has been a consistent presence in Canadian sports, also covering Olympic Games for the CBC since 1988, taking over as chief anchor after Brian Williams’ departure. He has hosted CBC’s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, and the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria.
His broadcasting prowess has earned him numerous accolades, including eight Gemini Awards for Best Sports Broadcaster and for Best Host or Interviewer in a Sports Program or Sportscast. In 1996, he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, followed by the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2016, MacLean and Don Cherry were honored with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. He also holds an honorary degree from Lakehead University (2018) and the University of Alberta (2019). Beyond broadcasting, MacLean has served as a Level 5 referee with Hockey Canada, officiating in junior, minor pro, senior, and university leagues, and even a 2006 NHL preseason game.
