About

Ronald Mandel Lott was born on May 8, 1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was an All-America collegiate player at the University of Southern California and was the San Francisco 49ers’ first-round pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, as the eighth player chosen overall. Lott made an immediate impact, starting as a left cornerback and contributing significantly to the 49ers’ Super Bowl XVI victory in his rookie season. He became only the second rookie in NFL history to return three interceptions for touchdowns.

Throughout his 14-year career, Lott demonstrated exceptional versatility, playing both left and right cornerback, and free and strong safety. This adaptability earned him 10 Pro Bowl invitations across three different positions. His aggressive, hard-hitting style of play became a defining characteristic. A career turning point came in 1985 when he switched to the safety position. In 1986, he led the league with a career-high 10 interceptions, along with 77 tackles, three forced fumbles, and two quarterback sacks, marking one of his finest seasons. During his tenure with the 49ers (1981-1990), the team secured eight NFC Western Division titles and four Super Bowl championships (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV). He recorded 63 career interceptions and surpassed the 1,000-career tackle mark in 1993.

After leaving the 49ers, Lott played for the Los Angeles Raiders (1991-1992) and the New York Jets (1993-1994). He returned to the 49ers in 1995 but retired before the season began due to accumulated injuries. Lott was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000, his first year of eligibility. Off the field, he became a successful businessman, private-equity investor, and philanthropist. He founded All Stars Helping Kids and co-founded Champion Charities, focusing on supporting educational and health projects for children.
