About

Rory James Nugent Stewart, born on January 3, 1973, in British Hong Kong, has carved out a diverse career spanning diplomacy, academia, politics, and media. His early life involved education at the Dragon School, Eton College, and Balliol College, Oxford, where he read history. After graduation, Stewart joined Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, serving in Indonesia from 1997 to 1999 and as British Representative to Montenegro in 1999. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he was appointed Deputy Governorate Co-ordinator in Maysan and Dhi Qar for the Coalition Provisional Authority, an experience that earned him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his service.

His career took a notable turn with an extensive walk across Asia from 2000 to 2002, culminating in a 36-day solo trek across Afghanistan. This journey inspired his acclaimed book, “The Places in Between,” a New York Times bestseller that earned him the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize in 2005. He continued to write, with “The Prince of the Marshes” detailing his experiences in Iraq, and “The Marches” exploring his walk along the Anglo-Scottish border. Stewart also dedicated three years to establishing the Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Afghanistan, a human development NGO focused on restoring historic buildings and traditional crafts. From 2008 to 2010, he was a distinguished academic, serving as the Ryan Family Professor of Human Rights and director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University.

In 2010, Stewart was elected as the Member of Parliament for Penrith and The Border, representing the Conservative Party. His parliamentary career included roles such as Chair of the Defence Select Committee (2014-2015) and various ministerial positions, including Minister for the Environment (2015-2016), Minister of State for International Development (2016-2018), Minister of State for Africa (2017-2018), and Minister of State for Prisons (2018-2019). He briefly served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development in 2019. After leaving party politics and an unsuccessful mayoral bid for London, Stewart transitioned further into broadcasting and academia, co-hosting “The Rest Is Politics” podcast since 2022 and teaching at Yale’s Jackson School of Global Affairs.
