About

Ross James Brawn was born on November 23, 1954, in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England. His early interest in engineering led him to an apprenticeship with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in 1971, where he qualified as an instrument mechanic. His motorsport journey began in 1976 at March Engineering as a milling machine operator, soon becoming a mechanic for their Formula 3 team. In 1978, he joined the newly formed Williams team as a machinist, quickly advancing to roles in R&D and as an aerodynamicist. After a stint with Haas Lola in 1985 and Arrows, he moved to Jaguar’s Sportscar racing division in 1989, where he was the lead designer for the Jaguar XJR-14, which won the 1991 World Sportscar Championship.

Brawn returned to Formula One in 1991 as technical director for Benetton, playing a crucial role in securing consecutive World Drivers’ Championships in 1994 and 1995 with Michael Schumacher, and the World Constructors’ Championship in 1995. His strategic prowess became a hallmark of his career. Following Schumacher to Ferrari in late 1996, Brawn served as technical director, contributing significantly to the team’s six consecutive Constructors’ Championships starting in 1999 and Schumacher’s five consecutive Drivers’ titles from 2000 to 2004. He took a sabbatical in 2007 before returning to Formula One as team principal for Honda in 2008.

In 2009, Brawn acquired the Honda team, creating Brawn GP. Under his leadership, the team achieved remarkable success, winning both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in its sole year of competition. Following this, Mercedes-Benz bought into the team in late 2009, with Brawn continuing as team principal and co-owner. He remained with Mercedes until 2013, helping to lay the groundwork for their future championship successes. After announcing his retirement from Formula One in 2014, Brawn returned in 2017 as managing director, Motor Sports, and technical director for the Formula One Group, a role he held until his final retirement from the sport in 2022.
