Roy Edward Casagranda, PhD, is an accomplished academic specializing in Government, deeply ingrained in the Austin Community College (ACC) system. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Houston, followed by a Master of Arts in Political Science from the same institution. His doctoral studies culminated in a PhD in Germanic Studies from the University of Texas at Austin between 2011 and 2017. His dissertation, “Colonization of the Normative Realm in the Age of Instrumentality,” explored why apolitical actors engage in the political realm, incorporating case studies like the role of Soccer Hooligans in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and the Occupy Austin Movement.

Dr. Casagranda’s career at Austin Community College spans from June 2006 to the present, where he serves as a Professor in the Government Department, teaching subjects such as Introduction to Political Science, United States Government, and Texas State and Local Government. Beyond ACC, he held roles as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Maryland University College from 2008 to 2012, and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Government and Politics Department for the same institution from 2007 to 2008. Earlier in his career, from 2002 to 2004, he was an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at Tomball College (Lone Star) and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston from 2002 to 2003.

His expertise extends to being a frequently sought-after Middle East Political Affairs Expert for local news affiliates like KVUE (ABC), KXAN (NBC), and FOX 7 in Austin. Dr. Casagranda has also contributed extensively to international publications, including Iran’s Mehrnameh Weekly, Hamshahri Daily, and Donya-e-Eqtesad Daily, focusing on Arab and US politics and history. He is the founder and president of The Austin School, a public lecture series, and the founder and faculty advisor for the Pinnacle Student Political Science Association and the “Twelfth Revolution: Politics and History Club” at ACC, demonstrating his commitment to academic discourse and student engagement. In 2017, he was recognized with the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award.
