Gemmell later pursued her acting career in London, where her father resided. Her professional training was completed at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, an institution noted for producing acclaimed alumni such as Terence Stamp and Hugh Bonneville.

Her career began to gain prominence with a leading role in the 1997 film “Fever Pitch,” where she starred opposite Colin Firth. This was followed by a consistent presence in television, taking on supporting roles in popular series such as “EastEnders,” “Casualty,” and “Penny Dreadful.” A significant recurring role in her television career has been portraying Carly Beaker, the mother of the title character in the “Tracy Beaker” franchise, a role she began in 2004 and reprised in 2021 for “My Mum Tracy Beaker.”

In recent years, Gemmell has achieved broader international recognition for her role as Lady Violet Bridgerton in the highly successful Netflix series “Bridgerton,” which premiered in 2020.
