About

Ryan David Leaf was born on May 15, 1976, in Great Falls, Montana. He showed athletic promise early, leading Charles M. Russell High School to a Montana state title in 1992. Opting for a quarterback role, he attended Washington State University, where he quickly made a significant impact. In his junior year, Leaf averaged 330.6 passing yards per game and threw for a Pacific-10 Conference record 33 touchdowns, leading the Cougars to their first Pac-10 championship in school history. After a strong showing in the 1998 Rose Bowl, where Washington State narrowly lost to the Michigan Wolverines, Leaf was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, ultimately finishing third. He was also named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American by The Sporting News. These collegiate achievements positioned him as a top prospect for the NFL draft.

In the 1998 NFL Draft, Leaf was selected as the second overall pick by the San Diego Chargers, following Peyton Manning. He signed a four-year contract worth $31.25 million, including a record-setting $11.25 million signing bonus for a rookie. However, his NFL career was marked by poor performance, conflicts with teammates and media, and injuries. After problematic rookie and second seasons, he was released by the Chargers in 2001. Brief stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys followed, but his career concluded prematurely in 2002 when he retired from the Seattle Seahawks.

Following his football career, Leaf pursued higher education, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in humanities from Washington State in 2005. He later served as a volunteer quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University. After facing significant legal troubles related to drug offenses and a period of incarceration, Leaf has dedicated himself to addiction recovery and mental health advocacy. He now serves as a Program Ambassador for Transcend Recovery Community, hosts a radio show, and works as a college football analyst for networks like the Pac-12 Network and ESPN.
