Patrick Ryan Kerrigan was born on August 16, 1988, in Muncie, Indiana. He attended Muncie Central High School, where he excelled in both defensive end and tight end positions. In his senior year, he recorded 90 tackles and 19 sacks as a defensive end, alongside 40 receptions for 789 yards and six touchdowns as a tight end. Kerrigan committed to Purdue University for college football, where he was a prominent player from 2007 to 2010. During his college career, he set the Big Ten’s all-time record for forced fumbles, earned unanimous All-American honors in 2010, and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. These achievements led to his selection by the Washington Redskins in the first round (16th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Kerrigan embarked on an 11-season professional career, primarily as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Notably, he holds the NFL record for consecutive starts by a left outside linebacker and became the Washington franchise’s all-time sack leader with 95.5 sacks, also leading the team in forced fumbles with 26. His tenure with the Washington Redskins/Football Team (2011-2020) was marked by consistent performance, including four Pro Bowl selections (2012, 2016, 2017, 2018). After a season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, Kerrigan retired as a player in July 2022, signing a one-day contract to retire with Washington. He soon transitioned into coaching, joining the Washington Commanders as an assistant defensive line coach in September 2022, and later being promoted to assistant linebackers coach and pass rush specialist in February 2024.
Throughout his career, Kerrigan demonstrated durability, playing all 16 games in nine of his eleven seasons. His impact extended beyond the field through charitable endeavors, founding ‘Ryan Kerrigan’s Blitz for the Better’ foundation in 2013 to support children in the community. He was recognized for his community involvement, receiving the NFLPA Community MVP award. Kerrigan’s post-playing career continues his involvement in football, leveraging his extensive experience and leadership to mentor future players.
