About

Sally Phillips was born on May 10, 1970, in Hong Kong. Her early life involved living in various countries, including the Far East, the Middle East, Italy, and Australia, due to her father’s career with British Airways. She attended Wycombe Abbey School and later pursued higher education at New College, Oxford, where she earned a first-class degree in Italian and linguistics. During her time at Oxford, Phillips joined the Oxford Revue, an experience that introduced her to comedy and performance. She furthered her drama studies with the Théâtre de Complicité, laying the groundwork for her career in entertainment.

Phillips established her comedic foundation performing at nine Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, featuring in productions such as ‘Ra-Ra-Rasputin’ and ‘Cluub Zarathustra.’ Her television debut came in 1994 on ‘Fist of Fun,’ and she gained significant recognition as a co-creator, writer, and performer in the sketch comedy show ‘Smack the Pony,’ which ran from 1998 to 2002 and received two International Emmy Awards. Her acting career also includes roles like Sophie in ‘I’m Alan Partridge’ (1997) and Kate Nash in ‘Rescue Me’ (2001). Phillips’s ability to combine writing and performing has been a consistent aspect of her professional life, leading to both critical acclaim and popular roles.

Her career continued to flourish with notable appearances in major film franchises and television series. Phillips became widely known for her role as Shazza in the ‘Bridget Jones’ film series (‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ in 2001, ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ in 2004, and ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ in 2016). She also appeared as Mrs. Bennet in ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ (2016) and as Tilly in the popular sitcom ‘Miranda’ (2009–2015). Her versatility extends to dramatic roles and voice acting, including ‘Ferdinand’ (2017). Beyond acting, Phillips has taken on producing roles and has been a vocal advocate for Down syndrome awareness, making a BBC documentary, ‘A World Without Down’s Syndrome?’ (2016), which highlighted the ethical implications of prenatal screening. She continues to be an active presence in both comedy and advocacy.
