As a player for Ter Leede from 1994 to 2003, she was instrumental in securing two Dutch championships in 2001 and 2003, along with another KNVB Cup win in 2001. Wiegman also proudly represented the Netherlands national team, earning 99 official caps and captaining the squad, including participation in the 1988 FIFA Women’s Invitation Tournament. Following her retirement as a player in 2003, she swiftly transitioned into coaching, leading Ter Leede to a Dutch championship and KNVB Cup double in 2007. Her early managerial success continued with ADO Den Haag Women, where she guided them to an Eredivisie title and two KNVB Cups in 2012 and 2013.
Wiegman’s coaching career ascended dramatically when she joined the Netherlands women’s national team as assistant coach in 2014. Appointed head coach in 2017, she steered the team to a historic UEFA Women’s Euro title, marking the nation’s first major honor in women’s football, and was recognized with The Best FIFA Women’s Coach award in 2017. Under her leadership, the Netherlands subsequently reached the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in 2019 and secured the Algarve Cup in 2018. Her exceptional performance earned her a second The Best FIFA Women’s Coach award in 2020, solidifying her reputation as a formidable international coach.
Maintaining her elite status, Wiegman was honored with the Women’s Football Awards Manager of the Year in 2024. She continued her unprecedented run by guiding England to back-to-back UEFA Women’s Euro titles in 2025, becoming the first-ever men’s or women’s manager to reach five consecutive major international tournament finals. Her remarkable achievements were further acknowledged with the Ballon d’Or Women’s Coach of the Year in 2025, underscoring her unparalleled success in women’s football.
