Sasha Kekauoha, known professionally as Sasha Colby, was born on July 26, 1984, in Waimānalo, Hawaii, the youngest of seven children. She was raised in a conservative Jehovah’s Witness household. Colby began engaging in drag secretly during her teenage years. Her father passed away by suicide in 2016. She pursued a career in drag performance, gaining recognition as a beauty queen and pageant legend within the community. Sasha Colby is also a trans woman and is based in Los Angeles. She is the drag mother of Kerri Colby, a contestant from Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and singer-songwriter Chappell Roan.
Colby’s career highlights include winning the Miss Continental competition in 2012, a significant achievement in the drag pageant circuit. In 2018, she was cast in Sasha Velour’s drag showcase ‘NightGowns,’ later appearing in its 2020 docu-series. She performed alongside other drag queens at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, preceding Jennifer Lopez’s performance and wearing a look inspired by the artist. In 2020, she represented Hawaii in GLAAD’s video campaign to mobilize voters for the U.S. presidential election. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Colby organized monthly trans-inclusive events at The Chapel in West Hollywood, California.
In 2023, Sasha Colby was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15, becoming the first Native Hawaiian and the first winner of Polynesian descent to achieve this title. Her victory made her the second trans woman to win RuPaul’s Drag Race. That same year, she spoke at the annual Pride Month celebration hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasizing the importance of trans excellence and drag in advocacy. Colby is known for incorporating her Native Hawaiian culture into her performances and advocacy, drawing inspiration from Hawaiian history and mythology, and is openly polyamorous, with three partners.
