American hero Scott O’Grady is a former United States Air Force Captain and fighter pilot who was thrust into the limelight when he was shot down behind enemy lines during the Bosnia conflict in June 1995. Forced to eject from his F-16C plane after being attacked whilst patrolling the no-fly zone, the experienced pilot and soldier O’Grady evaded capture for six days hiding in hostile territory.
After what is now known as the Mrkonjic Grad incident, a heavily injured O’Grady survived thanks to his military training and living on bugs, grass and rainwater, despite attempts to flush him out by local troops. With only a failing radio to keep in contact O’Grady was eventually rescued by the US Marines. On returning home O’Grady was awarded both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for displaying bravery and being wounded during his mission.
Since his story has come to light O’Grady has co-written two books based on his experiences and completed a master’s degree in Religious Studies. O’Grady is also an active Republican and takes a keen interest in US politics, having made attempts to run for office himself. Much in demand by the press O’Grady has appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, was named by CNN as one of the Voices of the Millennium and regularly appears on television to discuss how his extraordinary experience has changed him.
