Shikhar Dhawan, born on December 5, 1985, in New Delhi, India, began his cricketing journey at a young age, training at the Sonnet Club. Initially a wicket-keeper, he transitioned to a left-handed opening batter, despite being naturally right-handed. His early career saw him excel in youth cricket, leading the scoring in the 2000/01 Vijay Merchant Trophy and being named Player of the Tournament in the 2004 Under-19 World Cup for his remarkable 505 runs. These formative years playing for Delhi’s junior and senior teams laid the groundwork for his future international success, demonstrating consistent performance in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Dhawan made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India in October 2010 against Australia, followed by his Test debut in March 2013 against the same opposition. In his Test debut, he achieved the fastest century by a batsman on debut, scoring 187 runs off 174 balls. His career has been marked by key achievements in major tournaments, including being the Player of the Tournament in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and the leading run-scorer at the 2015 World Cup. Across ICC World Cups and Champions Trophies, he maintained an average of 65.15, the highest among players with over 1000 runs in these events. He also became the first Indian to score a century in his 100th ODI in 2018. Dhawan officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24, 2024.
His Indian Premier League (IPL) career saw him represent several franchises, including Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings. He demonstrated consistent batting prowess throughout his IPL tenure, notably becoming the first batsman in IPL history to score back-to-back centuries in 2020. He captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 and later led the Punjab Kings in the 2023 IPL season. Beyond his cricketing achievements, Dhawan has engaged in various brand partnerships, reflecting his appeal and recognition beyond the sport.
