Dhawan previously led the scoring in the 2000/01 Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2001, making his first-class debut for Delhi in 2004 and List A debut in 2005. In his Test debut, he achieved the fastest century by a batsman on debut, scoring 187 runs off 174 balls, a record that solidified his place in international cricket.
