Shriya Lohia, born and raised in India, began her motorsport journey at the age of nine during a family trip. Her initial experience with go-karting in Panchangani, Maharashtra, ignited a strong passion for racing. Despite the financial challenges associated with motorsports, her family supported her ambition, leading her to professional karting training in Bengaluru in 2018. She frequently traveled from Pune to Bengaluru for these sessions, demonstrating her commitment to the sport. Her dedication quickly yielded results, including a fourth-place finish in the Rotax Max India Karting Championship’s Micro Max category in 2018. Over the following years, Shriya consistently performed well, earning the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India’s (FMSCI) Outstanding Women in Motorsports’ award for four consecutive years.
In 2023, at the age of 15, Shriya achieved a significant milestone by becoming the youngest female driver to race and score points in the inaugural Indian F4 Championship, representing Hyderabad Blackbirds. This achievement highlighted her skill and determination in a high-speed, competitive environment, where she reached speeds of over 210 kmph. Her progression in motorsport has been marked by overcoming not only financial hurdles, eventually securing her first sponsor after a year and a half in the sport, but also societal stereotypes about women in racing. Shriya, now 18 and a 12th-grade science student, balances her racing career with her academics through homeschooling, emphasizing the importance of both.
Shriya’s efforts and success have not gone unnoticed; she was honored with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in 2022, an award she considers a milestone for herself and for motorsport in India. With over 120 races and eight awards to her name, Shriya continues to pursue her ultimate goal of reaching Formula 1 and representing India on the global stage. She actively works to challenge gender stereotypes within the sport, aiming to inspire more women to participate and normalize their presence in racing. Her journey reflects a commitment to her dreams and a broader mission to pave the way for future female racers.
