Sierra Joy Romero is a distinguished Mexican American professional softball player whose career has been marked by exceptional achievements and contributions to the sport. She played college softball at the University of Michigan from 2013 to 2016, where she set numerous records and earned recognition as a four-time All-American. Romero’s remarkable performance included leading the NCAA Division I in runs scored and grand slams, while simultaneously holding the Big Ten Conference career Triple Crown, total bases, and slugging percentage records. Her accolades include being named the espnW Softball Player of the Year in 2015 and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year in 2016.
Romero’s collegiate journey began with a stellar freshman season in 2013, where she was honored as the Big Ten Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. She made an immediate impact by starting all 64 games and setting a Michigan single-season record with 23 home runs. Her continued excellence in 2014 and 2015 solidified her status as a top player, culminating in her second Triple Crown and a record-setting tenth career grand slam. In her final season, she achieved a career-high 18-game hitting streak and became the first college player to score 300 runs.
Following her collegiate success, Romero was drafted second overall by the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch league, where she quickly established herself as a key player, earning All-NPF team honors in 2017. Despite facing challenges, including a torn ACL that sidelined her for the 2019 season, her resilience and dedication to the sport remained evident.
Transitioning into coaching, Romero joined the Oregon Ducks softball staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 2018, where she has continued to inspire and mentor young athletes. Her extensive experience and passion for the game make her a valuable asset to the coaching staff, as she shares her knowledge and skills with the next generation of softball players.
