Simon Brotherton

Simon Charles Brotherton was born on May 14, 1969. He began his broadcasting career while still in school, working with BBC Local Radio. His involvement in radio continued as he pursued studies at Birmingham University, where he joined BBC Radio WM. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his comprehensive career in sports broadcasting.

In 1990, Brotherton joined the BBC network officially, commencing a career that would see him become a prominent voice in sports. He has contributed significantly to football coverage, commentating on the Premier League, multiple FIFA World Cups, and UEFA European Championships, including Euro 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. His football commentary also extends to the African Cup of Nations, UEFA Champions League Final, and UEFA Europa League Final. Beyond football, his expertise encompasses a diverse range of sports, including the Tour de France, Formula One, World Championship Boxing, Athletics, and Major League Baseball’s World Series.

Brotherton’s career progression saw him become the lead BBC commentator for the Track Cycling World Championships and Olympic Games cycling events from 2013 and 2016 respectively. He also serves as the lead Channel 4 commentator for the Paralympic Games cycling. His commentary roles further expanded to include speed skating at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics for the BBC. His consistent presence and wide-ranging commentary roles have established him as a highly respected figure in sports broadcasting, evident in his long-standing work on programs such as “Match of the Day” from 1998 to 2025.
