Sky Brown was born on July 7, 2008, in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother, Mieko, and a British father, Stuart. Growing up in a skateboarding family, her early life was immersed in the sport, with a skate ramp in her backyard, as there were no public skate parks in her hometown of Takanabe, Miyazaki. She also developed an interest in surfing. Brown’s skateboarding talent emerged at a young age, with her learning tricks from YouTube videos rather than a formal coach. By 2016, at just 8 years old, she became the youngest competitor ever at the Vans US Open. She quickly progressed, securing second place in the Asian Continental Finals in 2017 and a top 10 finish in the 2018 Vans Park Series.
In 2018, at the age of 10, Brown turned professional, becoming the youngest professional skateboarder globally. The same year, she won the American television show *Dancing with the Stars: Juniors*, showcasing her versatility. In 2019, she made the decision to compete for Great Britain, citing the British Skateboarding Association’s “more relaxed approach.” This marked a significant step toward her Olympic aspirations. That year, Brown earned a bronze medal in the park event at the 2019 World Skateboarding Championship in São Paulo and became the first female to land a frontside 540 at the X Games. Her journey was tested in May 2020 when she sustained severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures and a broken wrist, from a fall during training. Despite the seriousness of the accident, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering to continue her pursuit of Olympic gold.
Brown’s determination culminated in July 2021 when she won gold at the X Games women’s skateboarding park event. She then represented Great Britain at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, where, at 13 years and 28 days old, she won a bronze medal in the park skateboarding event, becoming Great Britain’s youngest-ever Olympic medalist. She carried this momentum into subsequent years, retaining her X Games title in 2022 and winning the Dew Tour event for the second consecutive year. In 2023, she became the first British skateboarding world champion by winning the park event at the World Skateboarding Championship in Sharjah. Brown continued her Olympic success, securing another bronze medal in the park event at the 2024 Summer Olympics, just a week after dislocating her shoulder, further solidifying her status as a leading figure in skateboarding.
