Sloane Stephens was born on March 20, 1993, in Plantation, Florida, to parents who were accomplished athletes. She began playing tennis at age nine in Fresno, California, before moving to Florida for more intensive training. She trained at the Evert Tennis Academy and later the Nick Saviano High Performance Tennis Academy. Stephens turned professional in 2009, and by 2011, she had entered the top 100 of the WTA rankings, becoming the youngest player in the top 100 at 18 years old. Her career saw a significant breakthrough at the 2013 Australian Open, where she reached the semifinals, defeating world No. 3 Serena Williams, and achieving a career-high ranking of No. 11 later that year.
After a period of inconsistency and a left foot injury that kept her off the court for months in 2016-2017, Stephens made a remarkable comeback. She returned in mid-2017 and, in her fifth tournament back, won the 2017 US Open singles title, defeating Madison Keys in the final. This victory elevated her to a career-best ranking and earned her the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award. In 2018, she continued her strong performance by winning her first Premier Mandatory title at the Miami Open, reaching the French Open final, and peaking at world No. 3 in July 2018. She also finished as a runner-up at the WTA Finals in 2018.
Despite facing further challenges with form in subsequent years, Stephens continued to compete at a high level. She achieved her seventh WTA singles title at the Abierto Zapopan in 2022 and her eighth career singles title at the Rouen Open in April 2024. Off the court, Stephens has pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Indiana University East and a Master of Business Administration from DeVry University. She is currently studying for a Doctor of Business Administration at Keiser University. She also engages in philanthropic work through the Sloane Stephens Foundation, which supports youth tennis programs and education.
