Spencer George Matthews was born on August 6, 1988, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. He is the third son of landowner and entrepreneur David Matthews and artist Jane Spencer Parker. Matthews spent his early life between the family’s 30-acre Caunton Manor estate in Nottinghamshire and Eden Rock in Saint Barthélemy. He received his education at Eton College and later attended the University of Southern California to study cinema and television, though he left after nine months. His family acquired the Scottish courtesy titles of Laird and Lady of Glen Affric in 2007 upon purchasing a 10,000-acre estate in Scotland.
Matthews gained public recognition through his appearances on the E4 reality show “Made in Chelsea.” His television career expanded to include participation in various competition shows. In 2017, he won the fourth series of Channel 4’s “The Jump.” The following year, he reached the final of “Celebrity MasterChef.” He also became the face of Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Deluxe Omnitrix Watch in 2018. In 2019, he starred alongside his wife in their own E4 show, “Spencer, Vogue and Baby Too,” which was renewed for a second series.
Beyond television, Matthews has established himself as an entrepreneur. He founded CleanCo, a brand specializing in non-alcoholic spirit alternatives, motivated by his own journey to sobriety and the desire to offer sophisticated alternatives for individuals choosing not to consume alcohol. Matthews has also undertaken significant physical challenges for charity. In 2024, he became a Guinness World Records holder for completing thirty marathons in thirty days in Jordan. He has also presented for BBC’s “Watchdog” and featured in a CBeebies marketing campaign. His personal story was further explored in the Disney+ documentary “Finding Michael” (2023), which chronicled his attempt to recover his brother Michael’s body from Mount Everest.
