About

Walter Stacy Keach Jr. was born on June 2, 1941, in Savannah, Georgia. He is the son of Stacy Keach Sr., a theatre director and actor, and Mary Peckham, an actress. Keach was born with a cleft lip and a partial cleft of the hard palate, undergoing multiple operations as a child. He regularly wears a mustache to conceal the scars, and actively serves as the honorary chairman of the Cleft Palate Foundation, advocating for insurance coverage for related surgeries. He completed his education at Van Nuys High School in 1959, followed by two Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963, in English and Dramatic Art. He furthered his studies, earning a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1966, and held a Fulbright Scholarship at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Keach commenced his professional acting career in 1964 with the New York Shakespeare Festival, appearing in ‘Hamlet’. He gained prominence in 1967 with the Off-Broadway political satire ‘MacBird’, earning his first of three Obie awards. His film career began in the late 1960s with ‘The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter’, and he went on to star in films such as John Huston’s ‘Fat City’ (1972), which significantly advanced his film career. He played Sgt. Stedenko in ‘Up in Smoke’ (1978) and ‘Nice Dreams’ (1981), showcasing his comedic range. Known for his portrayal of hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer in the CBS television series from 1984 to 1987, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for this role. Later, he gained recognition among younger audiences as Ken Titus in the sitcom ‘Titus’ (2000-2002) and as Warden Henry Pope in ‘Prison Break’ (2005-2007). His performance as Ernest Hemingway in the television miniseries ‘Hemingway’ (1988) earned him a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination. Throughout his career, Keach has been particularly noted for his interpretations of Shakespearean roles, including King Lear, Hamlet, Richard III, and Macbeth. He is also a talented pianist and composer, having composed music for films and audio series. His voice has been a prominent feature in numerous documentaries, including ‘American Greed’ on CNBC, and he has lent his voice to various animated series and audiobooks. Keach was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2015 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019, acknowledging his significant contributions to the performing arts.
