United States Summer Ross is a professional beach volleyball player known for her multiple World Championship titles and her consistent performance on both domestic and international tours.
Both Ross and Hughes are Nike Athletes and are shaping up to be one of the most prominent pairs in beach volleyball.
Summer Ross, born on December 20, 1992, in Carlsbad, California, is a distinguished American beach volleyball athlete. Her career began at an early age, demonstrating significant potential. In 2010, at 17, Ross made history by becoming the first player ever to clinch both the FIVB Youth Under-19 and Junior Under-21 World Championships in the same year. This remarkable achievement led to her being named USA Volleyball’s Beach Female Athlete of the Year. Throughout her junior career, she consistently achieved top placements at international events, including fifth-place finishes at the 2009 U19 and U21 World Championships.
Ross attended Carlsbad Seaside Academy, graduating as valedictorian in 2011. She initially played indoor volleyball for the Washington Huskies in 2011 before transferring to Pepperdine University in 2012 to pursue NCAA beach volleyball. At Pepperdine, she led her team to win both the inaugural team and pairs AVCA National Championships and was recognized as a Division I Collegiate Beach All-American. In 2013, Ross transitioned to professional beach volleyball full-time. She secured her first AVP title at the Cincinnati Open in 2013 with Emily Day, and later earned multiple medals on the FIVB World Tour, including a silver in Phuket in 2013 and a gold medal at the Moscow Open in 2018 with Sara Hughes. Her consistent high-level performance led to her being named USAV’s Female Beach Athlete of the Year again in 2018.
Over the course of her professional career, Ross has partnered with several prominent players. Her partnerships with Emily Day (2013-2014), Jennifer Fopma (2015), Lane Carico (2015-2016), Brooke Sweat (2017-2018), and Sara Hughes (2018-2022) have contributed to numerous significant victories. Notably, she won the AVP Seattle Open twice, first in 2016 with Lane Carico and then again in 2017 with Brooke Sweat. Ross is recognized for her blocking ability, precise hand setting, and strong offensive game, consistently ranking among the top players in overall points, kills, and blocks in major tournaments.
