Suryakumar Ashok Yadav, born on September 14, 1990, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, began his cricket journey in Mumbai, where he played club cricket for Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club. He made his List A debut for Mumbai in February 2010, followed by his first-class and T20 debuts in the same year. His early career was marked by consistent performance in domestic cricket, notably topping the scoring charts for Mumbai in the 2011–12 Ranji Trophy season with 754 runs from nine games at an average of over 68. He was also recognized as the Best Under-22 cricketer by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2011 with the MA Chidambaram Trophy.
Yadav’s progression continued in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he first joined Mumbai Indians in 2012 and later Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014, contributing to their IPL victory that year. He returned to Mumbai Indians in 2018 and was instrumental in their title wins in 2019 and 2020. His consistent IPL performance and domestic achievements earned him a call-up to the national team. He made his T20I debut for India in March 2021 and his ODI debut in July 2021, quickly establishing himself as a vital player. He has primarily focused on limited-overs cricket for India, playing his only Test match in February 2023.
Suryakumar Yadav has since become a prominent figure in international cricket, especially in the T20I format. He was named the captain of the Indian T20I team in November 2023 and re-appointed in July 2024. He played a significant role in India’s victory at the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup and led the team to triumph in the 2023 and 2025 Asia Cups. His exceptional batting style earned him the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award in both 2022 and 2023, solidifying his status as one of the world’s leading T20I batters.
