Dr. Susan Nedza is a board-certified emergency medicine specialist and clinical informaticist. Her service as Chief Medical Officer for Region V of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Senior Executive at the American Medical Association (AMA), and as a Health Information Technology (HIT) executive and researcher has given her a unique vantage point of the confluence of clinical care, health care delivery models, data science, and health care policy.

Susan Nedza has a comprehensive background in medicine, business, and health policy. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Gannon University and her medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. After completing her emergency medicine residency at Christ Hospital and Medical Center, she served on its faculty until 2001. Her pursuit of interdisciplinary knowledge led her to obtain an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, in 2001, followed by a Master of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Chicago in 2019. In 2014, she became Board Certified in Clinical Informatics. Her academic achievements also include certificate programs in Global Health Delivery and Teaching Higher Education from HarvardX in 2021, underscoring her commitment to lifelong learning and global health initiatives.
Nedza’s career progression demonstrates a transition from clinical practice to leadership in national health policy. From 2003 to 2008, she served as a Chief Medical Officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), facilitating communication between the agency and healthcare providers, including Critical Access Hospitals and Tribal Health Systems across several Midwestern states. In 2007, she contributed to developing and implementing key programs such as Hospital Acquired Infection, Hospital Value-based Purchasing, Physician Quality Reporting Initiative, and Physician Resource Use Reporting, earning the CMS Administrator’s Citation in 2008. Following her tenure at CMS, she became the Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety at the American Medical Association, where she continued to build expertise in developing and adopting new payment models across the healthcare system.
In 2017, Susan Nedza designed the _Acute Unscheduled Care Model_, a new payment model for emergency services mandated by federal law, which is currently being tested by emergency department staffing organizations and private payers. She is also aligning this model with the Rural Emergency Hospital legislation being implemented by CMS. Her contributions have been recognized by the American College of Emergency Physicians, which awarded her the Colin Rorrie, PhD Award for Excellence in Health Policy in 2021. As the current Principal at SMN Health Policy Insights, a consultancy focused on national health policy and global health, she provides strategic services to healthcare companies. She is also a recognized expert in a number of areas including performance measurement, data-driven healthcare, and regulatory compliance. She also serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) for Rural Healthcare Solutions and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University.
