The eldest of nine children, Sarandon grew up in suburban Metuchen, New Jersey, and attended Edison High School. She later pursued higher education at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama. Her entry into acting was somewhat serendipitous; in 1969, while accompanying her then-husband Chris Sarandon to an audition for the film “Joe” (1970), she was cast in a significant role. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, challenging traditional roles and consistently delivering impactful performances. Early in her career, Sarandon also appeared on soap operas “A World Apart” (1970–1971) and “Search for Tomorrow” (1972).
Sarandon rose to prominence with her role as Janet in the musical horror film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975). Her talent was further recognized with her first Academy Award nomination for “Atlantic City” (1980). A career-defining moment came with her role in “Bull Durham” (1988), which cemented her status as a leading actress. Throughout the 1990s, Sarandon received four additional Academy Award nominations for “Thelma & Louise” (1991), “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992), and “The Client” (1994). She ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Sister Helen Prejean in “Dead Man Walking” (1995).
