Dutch short track speed skater Suzanne Schulting is an Olympic gold medallist, and a multiple World and European Championships title-winner. Schulting represents the Netherlands internationally, and has won major medals across all distances and in both individual and relay races. In recognition of her achievements, she has been named Dutch Sportswoman of the Year, and was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau.
Schulting began speed skating at the age of eight, and first made her mark on the world stage when she competed at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012. However, her earliest global successes would come at the World Junior Championships, including a silver medal at Osaka in 2015, and four medals (including two golds) at Sofia the following year. Meanwhile, she began making an impression at the European Championships, sharing in a silver medal in the 3000m relay in 2015, and returning to take multiple medals the following year. She has been a major figure at the tournament ever since, notably claiming three event victories and the overall gold at Dordrecht in 2019.
Schulting’s career reached new heights at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where she claimed bronze in the 3000m relay, and gold in the 1000m. In so doing, she became the first ever short track speed skating gold medallist for the Netherlands, and the country’s second youngest Winter Olympic champion. Elsewhere, Schulting has claimed 20 victories at the World Cup, becoming one of the circuit’s most successful athletes and securing five No. 1 season rankings in the 1000m and 1500m. Meanwhile, at the World Championships, she has claimed four gold medals, and impressively raced to victory in the 1000m, the 3000m and the overall tournament in 2019.
