Sway Calloway is an American journalist, radio personality, executive producer and rapper, known for hosting a wealth of programmes including in subject areas of music, news and culture. Calloway is best recognised as the co-host of the nationally syndicated radio show The Wake Up Show, being one half of the duo ‘Sway and King Tech’. The collaboration also continued off air and into music, with the duo creating albums such as Back 2 Basics and having a life long friendship.
Sway began his career as a rapper performing on San Francisco’s Pier 39 before teaming up with DJ King Tech after high school, with the duo performing at various San Francisco Bay Area clubs and releasing independent albums, before being picked up by major record label with Giant Records. It was the resulting album that saw the duo get their big break on radio. Due to their charismatic personalities, Sway and King Tech have hosted incredible artists and names on The Wake Up Show, including Eminem making his own broadcasting debut on the show, and this fame has transitioned to Sway hosting his own morning drive time show on the same station. Kanye West has appeared as a guest on Sway’s show and had an infamous meltdown on air, as well as the likes of former US President Barack Obama.
As Calloway built connections, so did his music grow in popularity, with Sway and Tech’s albums with Interscope Records reaching number 30 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and Number 1 on the Top Heatseekers chart. The album also featured contributions from The Roots, RZA, Eminem, Big Daddy Kane and more, with Sway’s fame from this work gaining him an appearance on Jennifer Lopez’s DVD, The Reel Me. Sway also now hosts Sway In the Morning on Sirius XM Shade45, as well as the MTV show TRLAM.
