Sydney Mclaughlin

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was born on August 7, 1999, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, into a family with a strong athletic background. Her father, Willie, was a 400m semi-finalist at the 1984 U.S. Olympic trials, and her mother was a middle-distance runner. Her older brother, Tyler, won silver in the 400m hurdles at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. McLaughlin-Levrone quickly distinguished herself, becoming the youngest American track and field athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games since 1980 when she made it to the Rio 2016 semi-finals at just 16 years old. She later attended the University of Kentucky for one year before turning professional in June 2018, signing with New Balance in October of the same year. Her career has been marked by a consistent pursuit of excellence and record-breaking performances.

Her professional career has seen significant achievements and milestones. In 2019, she secured a silver medal at the Doha World Championships in the 400m hurdles and won every Diamond League 400m hurdles race she entered that year. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021) were a pivotal moment, where she not only broke her own world record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.46 seconds to win gold but also earned a second gold medal as part of the women’s 4x400m relay team. She continued her dominance in 2022, further lowering her world record in the 400m hurdles to 50.68 seconds at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, becoming the first woman to break the 51-second barrier in the event. Her remarkable year culminated in being named World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year. In 2024, she again broke her own world record twice, first at the U.S. Olympic Trials with 50.65 seconds and then at the Paris Olympics with 50.37 seconds, successfully defending her Olympic title in the 400m hurdles and adding another relay gold. She also won the 400m at the 2025 World Athletics Championships with a championship record of 47.78 seconds. In January 2024, she published her autobiography, “Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith.”
