Emily Nokes, Bree McKenna, Lelah Maupin, and Eric Randall are the four members of Tacocat, an American indie punk rock quartet from Seattle, Washington, which formed in 2007. They received a lot of attention following the release of their second album, NVM (2014), which was engineered by Conrad Uno. The album received favourable reviews from music organs such as Pitchfork, AllMusic, and PopMatters, and it also made the CMJ top 10 college radio albums list. Tacocat uses sarcasm and satire to discuss feminist issues in many of their songs. “Crimson Wave” is a period-positive beach anthem with red imagery and witty menstruation metaphors. The song’s music video on YouTube received over 10,000 views in a single week and has since received over 415,000 views. On “Bridge to Hawaii,” the band makes jokes about seasonal affective disorder in Seattle and waiting for a late bus on “FU #8.”
Tacocat’s third album, Lost Time, was released on April 1, 2016 by Hardly Art Records. “I Hate the Weekend,” their pro-service worker single, was released in January 2016. Pitchfork streamed “Talk,” the album’s second single, on February 15, 2016, and announced that they would record the theme song for the 2016 Powerpuff Girls reboot. During the writing of Lost Time, singer Emily Nokes was inspired by the science fiction series The X-Files. The album’s title is a nod to The X-Files’ pilot episode, which dealt with the concept of lost time. Coachella 2017 included Tacocat as part of the lineup. On May 3, 2019, Sub Pop Records released the band’s fourth full-length album, This Mess is a Place.
