Terri Runnels

Terri Lynne Boatright Runnels was born on October 5, 1966, in Live Oak, Florida. She began her career in the entertainment industry as a makeup artist, working for CNN from 1985 to 1991, where she applied makeup for individuals including Larry King. During this period, she also engaged in makeup assignments for wrestlers at Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) on weekends. When JCP was acquired by Ted Turner and rebranded as World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1988, she continued her makeup work for some of its wrestlers. Her transition into a visible role within professional wrestling occurred in 1990 when she debuted in WCW as Alexandra York. In this character, she portrayed a laptop-carrying accountant who managed a wrestling stable known as the York Foundation, which featured wrestlers with finance-themed gimmicks. Her tenure with WCW lasted for two years, establishing her initial presence in the wrestling world.

In 1996, Runnels joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), later known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), making her debut at the Royal Rumble. She adopted the persona of Marlena, a character inspired by Marlene Dietrich. As Marlena, she managed her then-husband, Dustin Runnels, known as Goldust, frequently appearing at ringside in a director’s chair. This character was noted for its coolly indifferent, cigar-smoking, and seductive demeanor, often engaging in provocative actions. The Marlena character was instrumental in shaping the emerging “Attitude Era” of the late 1990s and the “Diva division” within the WWF. Following the dissolution of her alliance with Goldust, she reappeared under her real name in 1998 as the on-screen girlfriend of Val Venis. This led to the formation of the Pretty Mean Sisters (P.M.S.) alliance with Jacqueline Moore, a group that was prominent in storylines during the late 1990s.

Throughout her career in the WWF/WWE, Runnels was involved in various storylines and managerial roles. In late 1999, she orchestrated the Terri Invitational Tournament, offering her managerial services and a cash prize to the winning tag team, an event ultimately won by The Hardy Boyz. She also managed Edge and Christian and was involved in rivalries with other female performers, including The Kat, leading to matches like a catfight at WrestleMania 2000. She briefly held the WWE Hardcore Championship in 2002 by pinning Steven Richards. After years as a prominent on-screen personality, host, and interviewer, Runnels was released by WWE in March 2004, concluding her eight-year tenure with the company. She has since been involved in philanthropic efforts and made a return appearance to WWE for the Raw 25 Years special episode in 2018, where she was honored among other women who contributed to the company’s success.
