Thabiso Masemene is a distinguished opera singer whose career has flourished since he began formal voice training in 2004 at the Tshwane University of Technology. His early involvement with the Black Tie Ensemble in 2005 marked a significant milestone, where he understudied notable roles in operas by Donizetti and Puccini. His professional debut came in 2006 at the South African State Theatre, performing as Beppe in “I Pagliacci,” showcasing his talent to a wider audience.
Masemene’s academic achievements complement his artistic endeavors. He graduated Cum Laude with a National Diploma in 2007 and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in 2009. During his time at the university, he took on various roles, including Ferrando in “Cosi fan tutte” and Nemorino in “L’Elisir d’amore.” His performances in sacred music, such as Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” further highlight his versatility and dedication to the craft.
In 2010, Masemene expanded his horizons internationally by participating in the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival in Germany, where he performed alongside renowned soprano Renée Fleming. His portrayal of Don Basilio in “Le Nozze di Figaro” in 2011 and Ubaldo Piangi in the world tour of “The Phantom of the Opera” solidified his reputation, with over 500 performances across multiple countries.
Continuing to thrive, Masemene has toured extensively with productions like “Evita” and participated in high-profile events, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s birthday concert in South Korea. His recent performances, including the role of Judas Maccabaeus and participation in the Disney 100 Years Celebration Concert, reflect his ongoing commitment to excellence in opera and musical theatre.
