Tim Taranto

Timothy Taranto was born on January 28, 1998, in Melbourne, Australia, with an Australian mother and an American father from Texas. He spent his early childhood in Parkdale, Victoria, and was largely raised by his maternal grandparents following his parents’ separation. Taranto attended St Kevin’s College in Toorak and began his junior football career with the Mordialloc-Braeside Junior Football Club. His talent in Australian rules football became evident during his time playing TAC Cup football for the Sandringham Dragons, where he also developed a passion for the Melbourne Football Club as a supporter. These formative years laid the groundwork for his future professional career in the sport.

Taranto’s professional journey in the Australian Football League (AFL) began in 2016 when he was drafted by the Greater Western Sydney Giants as the second overall pick. He made his senior debut in Round 1 of the 2017 season against Adelaide. His impact was quickly recognized, earning an AFL Rising Star nomination in 2017 after a strong performance against Collingwood. During his tenure with the Giants from 2017 to 2022, Taranto played 114 games, demonstrating his developing skills and commitment to the team. His significant achievements during this period include winning the Kevin Sheedy Medal in 2019, signifying his status as the Giants’ best and fairest player.

In 2022, Taranto transitioned to the Richmond Football Club, signing a seven-year deal. His first season with Richmond in 2023 was marked by immediate success, culminating in him receiving the Jack Dyer Medal as the club’s best and fairest player. That same year, he was also awarded the Ian Stewart Medal for an outstanding best-on-ground performance, tallying 38 disposals, 18 contested possessions, and 10 tackles. Though his 2024 season was affected by a broken wrist, Taranto returned to contribute quality football, securing a club-high five Brownlow votes. He continued his strong performance into 2025, again winning the Jack Dyer Medal, highlighting his sustained high level of play and importance to the Richmond Football Club.
