Tom Barras

Thomas Elliott Barras was born on January 7, 1994, in Staines, UK. He began his rowing career at the age of 11 at Burway Rowing Club. He later attended Tiffin School and Esher Sixth Form College, where he pursued A Levels in PE, Biology, and Politics. During his time at Esher, Barras earned his first Great Britain vest, being selected for the 2012 World Rowing Junior Championships. He continued his academic and athletic pursuits at Cardiff University, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy. This educational background has allowed him to combine his high-performance sports career with a professional qualification in healthcare.

Barras made his senior international debut in 2017, securing a bronze medal in the men’s single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida. This achievement marked a significant step in his career, demonstrating his capability at the highest level of the sport. His career progression continued with consistent performances in various World Rowing Cups and European Championships across different boat classes, including men’s single, double, and quadruple sculls. A defining moment came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he earned a silver medal in the men’s quadruple sculls alongside Harry Leask, Angus Groom, and Jack Beaumont. This historic result was Great Britain’s first Olympic medal in that boat class.

Following his Olympic success, Barras continued to compete, participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where his quadruple sculls crew finished fourth. In parallel with his rowing commitments, he practices musculoskeletal physiotherapy in both NHS and private clinics. He also mentors junior athletes at his former club, Burway Rowing Club, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the sport that shaped his career. Barras is lottery funded through UK Sport, supporting his dedication to elite sports performance.
