Tom Blundell

Thomas Ackland Blundell, born on September 1, 1990, in Wellington, New Zealand, is a professional cricketer who plays as a right-handed wicket-keeper-batter. He was educated at Wellington College, Wellington, where he developed his cricketing skills. Blundell’s international career began in January 2017 when he made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for New Zealand against Bangladesh. Later that year, in December 2017, he made his Test debut against the West Indies, where he notably scored 107 not out, marking the highest Test score by a New Zealand wicket-keeper on debut and becoming the first wicket-keeper since Matt Prior in 2007 to achieve a century on Test debut.

Blundell’s career progression includes being named in New Zealand’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, despite being uncapped in an ODI match at the time. Although he did not play during the tournament, he was later awarded a new contract by New Zealand Cricket for the 2019–20 season. His ODI debut occurred in February 2020 against India. A significant achievement in his career includes being a member of the New Zealand team that won the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship. In recognition of his performances, Blundell was one of the recipients of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year award in 2023.

Throughout his career, Blundell has consistently demonstrated his capabilities as a wicket-keeper-batter. He has been a fixture for Wellington in first-class cricket since the 2012/13 season. His partnerships, particularly with Daryl Mitchell, have been a recurring theme in New Zealand’s crucial Test matches.
